I finally did what I had been planning for months. I inked a piece entirely on camera (Randy Greens Spiderman) and posted a 4 part tutorial on youtube.

In the video I ink the piece and do my best to explain some of the finer points of the inking process.

I worked really, really hard on this so please check it out (all 4 parts if you have time) and share it with friends.

Please follow the links below:

Man somehoe I forgot to add you to my watch list im so ashamed lol. But I did check out the videos and intersting your approach with the pen, since it seems so different from what I do with my brushes. Im thinking about trying out the pentell claigraphy pens to see if that works better for me than the hunt nibs.

Great watch! Those lineweights are solid on dude. I am def a beginner/hobby inker and the first piece I really did ok on was Randys Witchblade pinup. The guy has got such polished lines it is awsome for a novice like me to play with but at the same time challenging because if you stray from the lines it is plainly obvious! Thanks for all the little tips and tricks. I will def check out the caligraphy pens for the outlines. I think I used a .005 Koh I Noor on that one exclusively and the line weights were killing me. It's cool to watch how comfortably you throw those lines. For me it can be a stop and start challenge, and like you said not to do in the vid If I make a mistake I beat myself up about it and immediately go into fixit mode. I feel your pain on the Spidey webs. That Logan/Spidey drinking contest I inked was a pain to fill in all Spideys details! All in all it was fun to watch and very informative, I look forward to seeing more vids from you Justin! :)

Thanks for checking it out and actually listening. I had to edit out most of the dialogue to shorten the video for youtube (I had to cut half the footage out) the "real time" video of me inking and talking was 75 mins and I got a lot more in depth.

One day I might have to offer a tutorial on a more complex piece as a DVD.

For the outline I used a calligraphy pen filled with india ink. The brand name doesn't matter, since there are dozens of companies who make them and they are all pretty good. I like those pens for outlines because depending on how you tilt and turn the pen you can get a lot of different line weight.

For the detail lines (feathering and hatching) I was using a micron pen, size .3

For filling in black sections I was using a Sakura brush pen.

Hope that helps.
